ELDERS

Undertaken in collaboration with the 6ix Clicks, this project documents the diverse and vibrant community of senior citizens living in Toronto.  It explores the various cultural, environmental, and social intersections that have become hallmarks of the citizens of this city.  We focus on the experiences our subjects have had in arriving in Toronto from outside the city, or even the country; what those departures meant to them, and also how the arrival of this time of life, for some, allows for a departure from previous ways of living and creates opportunities to live one’s life on new, exciting terms.

This project seeks to provide a space for our subjects’ own voices and experiences to be featured prominently alongside their portraits.

Doing so highlights the diversity and strength of the city, while also bringing to light some of the challenges that seniors face as their needs and desires change with age.  In documenting them, we hope to create a record that embraces the vitality and diversity of Toronto, while also inspiring others through their stories.

Exhibited at Artscape Youngplace in Toronto, Feb.-Mar., 2018, as part of the Myseum Intersections Festival, the project consisted of 25 large panels comprised of a portrait, personal photos and interview text, all placed on a background map depicting place of birth. The ELDERS image gallery contains the portraits and interviews I conducted. The entire exhibition can be viewed on the 6ix Clicks website. The project is ongoing.
